Ask the Expert: 4 Tips to Make Your Spa More Family Friendly

It’s the perfect time of year to plan for spring break! We often receive questions about how to make spas more family friendly, so we’ve compiled some answers for you from some of our team members.

Spas are wellness centers, places to go when clients want to get away. But they can also be destinations for family bonding, and offering family-friendly options at your facility could be a profitable niche in a market that hasn’t been explored in your area. Here are a few approaches for a variety of budgets that you can take:

Offer family-oriented themes on your menu. These may include teen parties; mom and daughter facials; and dad and son massages, chocolate or teen emergency 911 facials.

Provide age appropriate treatments with complementary programs. A children’s area should include teen facials, massage, mani/pedis, and salon services. To complement these treatments, provide programs focusing on health and well-being, reviewing proper preventative measures, skin care, and nutritional tips that are needed during the teen years. If you don’t have the room or the budget for a designated area, simply include the children's services on the menu.

Make it pop! A teen spa (or designated area) needs to be lively and interactive. Provide a widescreen TV, computers, and interactive retail selections to suit their needs and interests such as DIY body scrubs, facial masks, and mixing bar for perfumed scents.

Have a separated children’s area with a communal section where they can meet up in a family environment. One example would be Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa in Hawaii. It offers a variety of spa activities for teens at Painted Sky, the only teen spa in the state. This facility features several age-specific spa treatments, activities, and amenities such as a lounge, yogurt and elixir bar, daily teen-only events, spa services designed for young men, and more. Plus, teens ages 14 and up may also reconnect with their families by enjoying soothing spa treatments at Laniwai.
