Ask These 6 Questions Before Buying a Towel Cabi for Your Spa
A towel cabi might not be the flashiest purchase you make for your spa, but choose the wrong one and you may notice it every single day.
Maybe it doesn’t hold enough towels for a busy afternoon. Maybe the door is awkward to reach during a service. Or maybe it technically fits inside your cabinetry, but there isn’t enough room around it for condensation and airflow.
That’s why it helps to think beyond size and price. The right towel cabi should fit your space, your services, and the way you actually work.
Before you buy, ask yourself these six questions.
1. Where Will You Use Your Towel Cabi?
Start with the big picture. Will your cabi live in a facial room, massage room, shared mani-pedi area, dispensary, or relaxation space?
Each location can have different needs.
A facial room might only need a compact warmer within easy reach of the treatment table. A shared mani-pedi area may benefit from a double cabi that allows you to separate moist towels from items you want to keep drier, such as herbal neck wraps.
Tip: Don’t shop for a cabi in isolation. Shop for the space where it will actually work. Measure the available area and think about how you’ll access the unit during a real service.
2. What Are You Putting Inside It?
Despite the name, towel cabis aren’t necessarily just for towels.
Depending on your services, you may also want to warm modeling masks, rubber mixing bowls with muds or exfoliants, herbal wraps, or tools such as gua sha or trigger point tools.
That matters because wet and dry items may need to be kept separate. A double cabi with distinct compartments, for example, can allow wet towels to be stored separately from items you want to keep drier.
This is also a good time to look at the interior design. A removable basket can make towels easier to access, while a silicone mat can help protect the interior from scratches and make spills easier to clean.
3. How Much Capacity Do You Really Need?
This is where it pays to think about your busiest day, not your slowest.
How many services do you perform? How many towels does each protocol require? How often will you realistically have time to restock?
The transcript gives these approximate capacities for the cabis demonstrated:
- Mini cabi: about 6 to 8 service towels
- Standard cabi: about 18 service towels
- Double cabi: about 24 service towels total, or roughly 12 per compartment
Actual capacity will depend on the size of your towels and how you fold or roll them. Be cautious when comparing manufacturer towel counts, too. Some capacity estimates may be based on much smaller, thinner towels than the ones you use for spa services.
And resist the temptation to squeeze in a few extras. Overfilling can prevent the door from sealing completely, allowing heat to escape and interfering with the cabi's ability to reach and maintain its intended temperature.
Plan for reheating time, too. The video recommends allowing about 20 to 30 minutes for a new batch of towels to get hot.
Smart workaround: If treatment-room space only allows for a mini cabi, consider keeping additional warmed towels in a larger unit in a nearby dispensary. That can make restocking easier without disrupting the guest experience.
4. Where Will It Sit?
Now get specific.
Think about how you move during a treatment. Can you reach the cabi easily without repeatedly standing, bending, stretching, or turning away from your client?
A countertop or cart can make access easier. Door style matters here, too. A pull-down, oven-style door may provide easier access from different positions than a side-swinging door.
If the cabi will sit inside built-in cabinetry, leave approximately 4 to 5 inches of space around it. Condensation and heat can become an issue when the unit is squeezed too tightly into cabinetry, potentially contributing to lifting, bubbling, or warping.
Also look at your outlet location before deciding where the cabi belongs. The video recommends plugging directly into an outlet or using a high-quality grounded electrical strip when needed, and specifically warns against connecting extension cords together.
5. Does It Have the Certifications You Need?
Because a towel cabi is an electrical device, certifications may be part of your buying decision.
The video recommends looking for UL listing or CE certification, which indicate that the unit has gone through third-party safety checks. These certifications may be particularly important for corporate spas, schools, or businesses with requirements connected to insurance, loans, or grants.
Before purchasing, check whether your organization has any specific requirements so you don’t discover them after the cabi arrives.
6. How Long Do You Want It to Last?
Are you buying something you expect to replace relatively soon, or are you looking for a cabi that could potentially serve your business for years?
That answer can affect what you’re willing to spend, but longevity also comes down to how you care for the unit.
Cleaning and disinfecting should become part of your daily routine. Remove leftover towels, clean and dry the baskets, wipe away condensation, clean and disinfect the interior and around the gaskets, and clean and dry the drip tray. Turn the unit off when you’re finished for the day.
Be gentle with the hardware, too. Avoid putting weight on the door, stacking towels on it, slamming it, or putting unnecessary pressure on the hinges.
And don’t forget about the company behind the cabi. Before buying, ask: Is there a 30- or 45-day return period? Can I get warranty parts? Is knowledgeable troubleshooting support available if something goes wrong?
Those questions can matter just as much as the features printed on the product page.
One More Thing: Don’t Let UV Be Your Deciding Factor
UV lights have become a popular towel cabi feature, but the video makes an important distinction: the UV light only reaches exposed areas. If a cabi is packed with towels, the light isn't reaching every surface.
Most importantly, UV is not a substitute for your regular cleaning, sanitation, and disinfection practices.
Choose for the Way You Actually Work
The best towel cabi isn't necessarily the biggest one or the one with the longest feature list. It's the one that makes sense for your day-to-day operation.
Before ordering, picture a fully booked day. Think about where you’ll reach for towels, how quickly you’ll go through them, what else needs to stay warm, when you'll have time to restock, and how you'll clean the unit at closing.
