The Solo Massage Therapist’s Guide to Getting Seen (and Booked)
Being a solo massage therapist can feel like shouting into the void. You’re great at what you do, but so are lots of others. And in a sea of social posts and online listings, it's easy to feel invisible.
But here’s the good news: you don’t need to shout louder; you just need to be different in a way that feels true to you. Let’s talk about how.
1. Know What Makes You You
Before trying to stand out, get crystal clear on what you're actually offering—not just massage, but your way of doing it.
- Do you specialize in a slower, more intuitive touch?
- Do you have a signature ritual that clients always comment on afterward?
- Are you the no-frills, get-in-get-out therapist for busy professionals?
Write down what clients say about you. That’s your magic, not the training certifications on your wall.
Not sure what that is yet? Try asking! You might say, “I’m refining how I talk about my work. Can you share what you remember most about your session today?” Often, their words will reflect your real strengths.
2. Niche Down
You’ve heard this before, but let’s go further.
Instead of “I help people with back pain,” try:
“I help new moms release shoulder tension from nursing and baby-wearing.”
Or:
“I work with runners who want to shave seconds off their race time.”
The tighter the niche, the stronger the signal. People don't want “massage”—they want to feel like you’re for them.
Not sure where to start? Ask yourself:
- Who have I loved working with the most?
- What life situations or challenges do they tend to have?
- What do they say they appreciate about our work together?
You don’t need to commit forever. Just pick a direction and try it for a little while. You can always adjust.
3. Show Up Where They Don’t Expect You
Is your dream client at the gym? A yoga studio? A running club?
Partner with businesses that already serve your people—and go beyond flyers. Offer a 15-minute demo massage at an event, or swap guest blog posts. Better yet, create a short video tip series for their email list, like “3 Things Runners Can Do Before a Massage.”
Not into video? No problem. Start smaller: write one helpful paragraph or tip and ask if a partner business would include it in their next email or post. It’s still visibility, and it’s still valuable.
You’ll build trust before they ever book.
4. Build Small, Loyal Communities
You don’t need 10,000 followers. You need ten people who rave about you.
Start a private group or email series for your regulars. Share bite-sized content: how you prep for your sessions, funny stories (HIPAA-safe!), or behind-the-scenes glimpses of your treatment room.
Let them feel like insiders. They’ll become your biggest advocates.
5. Ditch Stock Photos (Yes, Really)
That hands-on-back photo? Everyone’s seen it.
Instead, use real shots of your space, your hands, your actual vibe. Even a photo of your tea station or the view from your massage table is more honest and more memorable.
People want to know what it’s like to be your client, not how well you fit the “massage therapist” mold.
6. Offer a Tiny, Memorable Twist
It doesn’t have to be huge. One small, thoughtful detail can make people remember you:
- A warm towel wrap at the end of the session
- A personalized scent option they choose at check-in
- A card with one stretch suggestion based on their session
When you surprise people with care, they tell others.
7. Stay in Touch Like a Friend
Automated texts and emails are great, but don’t forget the human part.
Send a short, personal note after their first session:
“Hey [Name], loved meeting you today! Let me know how that shoulder feels tomorrow.”
Or drop a “thinking of you” email when you haven’t seen someone in a while. Keep it warm, light, and you.
People book again because they feel remembered.
You don’t need to be louder or flashier to stand out. Just more yourself. More present. More consistent.
Start small. Try one new thing this week. Don’t feel like you have to do all of this at once; choose what feels easiest and build from there. Let your people find you—and stick with you—because you feel like home.
