Get in Tune with Crystal Therapy: A Look at Metaphysics, Cleansing, and Charging

Whether you believe in the power of crystal therapy or not, some facts cannot be denied. Crystals are found in all your household items – your flatscreen, smartphone, and laptop all use them. Because they’re composed of compressed oxygen and silicon, crystals are capable of oscillating electricity. The idea behind our interaction with crystals is based on their electric nature and the electrical signals our bodies naturally produce.

Harnessing the Power of Crystals in Spa Treatments

Many spa professionals are incorporating crystal therapy into their services, offering clients a holistic approach to wellness. The practice centers around the belief that crystals possess unique energetic vibrations that can harmonize and balance the body's energy centers, known as chakras.

Chakras: Energy Centers and Their Connection to Crystals

Our chakras are vital energy vortexes located along the spine, each associated with specific emotions, organs, and functions. Here's a brief overview of the chakras and how crystals are believed to influence them:

  • Root Chakra (Muladhara) – Located at the base of the spine, this chakra governs our sense of grounding, security, and survival. Crystals like red jasper, black tourmaline, and hematite are believed to ground and stabilize this energy center.
  • Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana) – Situated in the lower abdomen, this chakra is associated with creativity, pleasure, and emotions. Orange carnelian, amber, and citrine are often used to stimulate and balance this chakra.
  • Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura) – Located in the upper abdomen, this chakra governs self-esteem, personal power, and digestion. Yellow crystals like citrine, tiger's eye, and amber are often chosen to boost confidence and enhance personal power.
  • Heart Chakra (Anahata) – Situated in the center of the chest, this chakra is associated with love, compassion, and forgiveness. Rose quartz, green aventurine, and malachite are believed to promote emotional healing and open the heart.
  • Throat Chakra (Vishuddha) – Located in the throat, this chakra governs communication, self-expression, and truth. Blue crystals such as aquamarine, lapis lazuli, and turquoise are often used to enhance communication and facilitate self-expression.
  • Third Eye Chakra (Ajna) – Situated between the eyebrows, this chakra is associated with intuition, psychic abilities, and inner vision. Amethyst, clear quartz, and lapis lazuli are often used to activate and strengthen intuition.
  • Crown Chakra (Sahasrara) – Located at the top of the head, this chakra is associated with spiritual connection, enlightenment, and universal consciousness. Clear quartz, amethyst, and selenite are believed to promote spiritual growth and connect us to higher realms.

Regardless of what crystals you choose to use in your treatments – or that they’ve been around since the early years of natural history – they still require some maintenance. Here’s a guide to help your crystals do the most for you.

Cleansing Your Crystals

This is certainly more than just using some soap and water. Crystals hold energies, so when they come into your possession, it’s beneficial to cleanse them of lingering energies so that they’re in prime condition for your intended treatments.

There are many different ways to cleanse crystals, some quicker than others. But during all these cleansing rituals, focusing on energies and emotions you want to release while cleansing, as well as charging them with new, focused intentions, is crucial to the process.

Salt and Water Crystal Cleansing

Water can be used in multiple ways to cleanse crystals, depending on the crystal itself and whether water can cause damage. Which route you choose to take for cleansing might be decided by how much time you have to devote to the task. For a simple, quick cleanse, place crystals in safe water (free of chemicals) in a glass bowl filled with water and let them soak for anywhere from an hour to a full day. If a crystal needs a deeper cleansing, it can soak for up to a week.

You can also put sea salt or cooking salt into the bowl for a more thorough cleanse, but don’t soak gemstones that are porous or have a high metal or water content. Put the wrong stone in salt or water and you run the risk of changing its appearance and properties.

Light of the Full Moon – Ritual Cleansing and Charging

For a good cleanse under the light of a full moon, start by giving your crystals a rinse under your faucet or at a nearby stream. Set them out just after sunset on the ground or another natural surface or on a windowsill.

Leave your crystals out overnight and bring them back in just after sunrise, that way they get a burst of energy from the sun. Once your crystals are back inside, it’s time to reflect with them and charge them with your intentions. They’ll not only be charged by your energy, but by that of the sun and moon, too.

Singing Bowl Cleansing

Because they provide long-lasting, powerful vibration, singing bowls are useful for cleansing your stones. Many practitioners believe that the sound restores positive energy while removing residual negative energy.

To cleanse your crystals using this method, smooth out a cloth on a table and place your singing bowl in the center. Next, set the stones around the bowl on the cloth. Begin playing your singing bowl by striking it gently with the mallet. In a clockwise motion, move the mallet around the outside rim until you feel the stones are cleansed. It could take 5-10 minutes, depending on the amount of cleansing needed.

Charging Your Crystals: Infusing Them with Intention

Both sunlight and moonlight can charge your crystals, the difference being that the sun offers a more intense and strong charge. Be wary though as strong sunlight can cause stones to lose their color, and potentially change the properties of the crystal.

Another great way to cleanse your crystals is to put them in a mesh bag and submerge them in a local, slow flowing river. The benefit of running water is that this simultaneously cleanses and charges your crystals. You can even simulate running water by placing a water safe crystal into a glass bowl and placing the bowl underneath a running faucet for 10-20 minutes.

Thought energy and physical contact were believed by Native Americans to be enough to charge crystals. They felt that the human body’s natural energy field could transfer energy to crystals merely through handling or rubbing them with the palms of our hands. When in contact with the crystals, meditate or focus on an emotion, word, or just a bright light to instill your energy within the stone and program it to help you.

Incorporating Crystal Therapy into Your Spa Services

Now that you have a better understanding of crystals and their cleansing and charging processes, consider incorporating crystal therapy into your spa services:

  • Massage: Place crystals along the spine or on specific chakra points during a massage. The gentle pressure and vibrations of the crystals can enhance relaxation and promote energy flow.
  • Facials: Use crystal rollers or gua sha tools to stimulate lymphatic drainage and boost circulation. Crystals can also be placed on chakra points on the face to balance energy and promote radiant skin.
  • Energy Healing: Incorporate crystals into reiki, chakra balancing, or other energy healing modalities to amplify the healing energy and enhance its effects.
  • Offer energy-infused gem water: Enhance your spa's ambiance with a dedicated space where guests can enjoy refreshing gem water infused with crystals using a VitaJuwel dispenser.
